Day Roll and Actions (Trials)
The day roll indicates the various matters and in which court it is to be heard. Matters where factual disputes exist and where oral evidence is required to settle the disputes are referred to as actions. In civil matters the parties are referred to as 'Plaintiff' and 'Defendant' as opposed to criminal cases where the 'State' is the plaintiff and the defendant is the 'Accused'.
Actions are initiated by issuing a summons which is usually accompanied by a document known as a 'Particulars of Claim' which sets out the details of the plaintiff's case. Actions usually runs over several years. On the day that an action is set down for trial it is allocated at roll call to a specific judge by the Deputy Judge President.
